Help with frustrating design
I have made a carpenters star then added some extra all the way around now 38" x 38" , I have 5 yds of the polka dot fabric and 4 1/2 yards of the cars fabric. I am making this for my 3 yr old Grandson, he asked for a quilt with cars on it, my plan was to incorporate these fabrics for a XL twin size bed, 40" x 90". I can't seem to figure out a plan to incorporate the cars fabric with the star. My son says the car fabric is too busy to put near the star. I have a orange piece I thought I would put a border around it. Do you think if I made borders and more borders it would look good, or stripes etc. Don't have a clue what to do next??

I like it how you have it laid out with the orange as the first border. Maybe you could also use the blue polka dot as the binding. Is your son a quilter too? My DH always has suggestions. I told him he needs to start quilting.

I don't agree with your son. I do not think the cars fabric is too busy to be next to the star. It is hard to tell for sure without auditioning it. But I think a narrow border of the orange say 2 to 3" then a very narrow white like 1" finished then the car fabric would be great for a 3 year old. It would result in a much wider quilt though. Your center is already 38". If you are looking to finish at 40" wide that only allows you 1" on either side. So I would rethink you finished dimensions of only 40" wide. Perhaps a 60" by 90" would look nicer with multiple borders. That car fabric needs to be at least 6" wide judging by the picture and size of print.
I think it will make your Carpenters Star sparkle and brighten up as well, that polka dot seems to dull it out just a bit. Use the polka dot for the backing and it would make fun binding too.

Personally I would make a new quilt for your DGS and use this for a wallhanging or a different quilt. It is just my personal preference since I like really child like quilts for kids...I would look for some big car fabric or applique some cars and use the cars fabric you show.

What a great job on that Carpenter's Star! And now I guess I'll throw out another alternative for you to mull over... how about using the red instead of orange? Somehow I just don't think the orange is quite it to frame and separate... I guess it looks a little dull to me. The red adds excitement and IMHO makes the quilt more of a child's quilt, whereas the orange just lies there and is more suitable for an older person

Since the DGS wants cars, IMHO, use the red, then the cars then the others. since you will need to change to proportions as you go out, put the cars on 2 side of the star. I just made an elaborate CS variation, with a red band around the star. I boxed in the 2 side pieces with the same red, then added my other borders. I think it worked quite well. If I were doing it, I might make diagonal pieced cars for cornerstones. I suspect whatever you do it will be greatly loved.
