Maybe a "X" across the 4patch and leaves in big blocks?

There are some wonderful variegated threads out there. I've seen one with blue and brown and beige. Food for thought?

I like catlover's opinion--variegated in blue, brown, beige in a FMQ of leaves.

Thank you, everyone! I am leaning toward an all-over leaf pattern in blue, but am off to look at variegated thread today. BTW, this a free pattern from Robert Kaufman called Boy Scout Quilt.
