Up North 01-30-2009 05:58 PM

Hmm don't know the name but it is the d9p then cut on the diagonal?? no?

Izy 01-30-2009 06:00 PM

Well spotted Up North!! The complexity is caused as you create a left turn and right turn pinwheel....I tell you it drove me near demented lol :D

Up North 01-30-2009 06:06 PM

I was just searching sites for a pattern that I made before and saw something like it but can't remember what it was called or where I saw it! Plus I just finnishe two d9p quilts!

dreamer2009 01-30-2009 06:09 PM

It's very pretty IZY.

Izy 01-30-2009 06:10 PM

I have made two D9P quilts recently, its a great pattern, I found this variation on a quilting blog, and thought I would give it a try as I had the fuchsia 4" charm squares, but not enough to do anything bigger than a small lap quilt so had a rummage in my scraps and found the toning fabrics, all these fabrics have been donated from my friends here on the Quilting Board, so a big thank you to Cathy M for the fuchsia fabrics and to everyone else who donated, I couldn't have made it without ya'll

sewjoyce 01-30-2009 06:36 PM

Janstar 01-30-2009 07:34 PM

Very pretty quilt Izy! I thought I recognized some of the pieces. Love the pink and green together! Lovely, as usual!!!!!!!!!!

sewsewquilter 01-30-2009 07:39 PM

Pretty quilt. Very interesting pattern. So... instead of cutting the block like + you cut like x?

pocoellie 01-30-2009 07:39 PM

Very pretty Izy. I had thought of trying the same thing, just hadn't done it yet, now I will. Thanks.

Jim's Gem 01-30-2009 07:41 PM

Hey Jan....I am only too pleased to rise to the challenge of finding a way to use all the fabrics from you gals, it's great fun mixing and matching the fabs  :D

You make a 9 patch, cut across as in the d9P THEN add a contrasting square on top of each 'corner' draw a line diagonally and stitch 1/4" from it on both sides like making HST's.

This creates two new squares from each 'corner' a clockwise HST and an anti clockwise HST........ you can now PLAY!!

There are a number of variations, depending on how you slash it, either across the 'corner' top left to bottom right or top right to bottom left, which will give you a different style block.

Plus I chose not to resew together the original four quarters of each block to give me more chance to mix up the fabrics over the whole top :D

One of the pictures posted shows the quarter squares in a different layout, using a row of clockwise pinwheels and next row anti clockwise pinwheels but off set to the left by half a block which gives a secondary offset diamond and zig zag effect....but there are several pattern combo's.

It's all down to how long you can stand twisting and turning the blocks before your brain is mashed like mine

It was on a blog I was reading...but I forgot to save the link, so just had to do from memory...I have posted above how to do it for anyone who wants to try it :D

Thanks Melissa, I 'think' I enjoyed making this one...now it's done!!

I am trying my best to make good use of all the lovely fabrics you all donated

I was determined I was using that trailing fuchsia for the border, and to be honest didn't plan the size in advance, just used up the 4" fuchsia charms that Cathy M sent me :D Somebody 'up there' was looking out for me as I JUST had enough and improvised with the mini pinwheel corner stones. I had to join the borders in 18" sections ( and a little 2" piece grrrrrhhhhhh!!) as it was fat quarters two of each, but the flow of the vine was going in different directions and had botch it up but I am really pleased with the effect :D

Quilt4u 01-31-2009 02:23 AM

Beautiful.

tlrnhi 01-31-2009 04:31 AM

WOW Izy, that's awesome!

Izy 01-31-2009 04:33 AM

Terri, glad you like it :D

I needed the distraction of a mind boggling pattern, we have got all the diggers in excavating the land...you would NOT believe the mess, and to boot it poured down last night, so now we are like hippo's wallowing

Gotta laugh!!

tlrnhi 01-31-2009 04:44 AM

It's really different and I LOVE it!

Oh my! I'm sure you have just a mess out there, not to mention all the noise going on!

Izy 01-31-2009 07:00 AM

Terri, noise isn't too bad as it is away from the villa thankfully, well nothing that a good bit of John Mayer or Jason Mraez, Jack Johnson, or such like can't drown out lol

sewbusy 01-31-2009 08:10 AM

Oh Izy that is stunning! I just love the design and the colors are perfect. What a eye catching quilt, but what a hard one to make. You have made it look easy, as always. Margaret

barnbum 01-31-2009 08:11 AM

Pretty colors and design!! I love the border fabric!

Butterflyspain 01-31-2009 08:14 AM

Elle

bj 01-31-2009 08:44 AM

Wow! That makes me dizzy...but I love it! I like the way some of the blocks fit together to make the tiny pinwheel. Very pretty!

PrettyKitty 01-31-2009 09:18 AM

Izy thats beautiful, I do so love your work.

Margie 01-31-2009 09:47 AM

How beautiful....your work is sooo nice.....sure looks hard to me

Margie :)

Bevanger 01-31-2009 10:01 AM

not sure, but i sure do like it

Izy 01-31-2009 10:37 AM

It's not as difficult as it looks Margie, but on reflection I think you could get just as good an effect if you swapped the D9P for a simple stripped pieced block which would give a similar effective without worrying about which way each angle had to be turned...does that make any sense to anyone..I THINK I know what I mean......

Think I will have another play with that idea another day....give my eyes a rest :D

Thanks everyone for your lovely comments, your a great bunch :D

Margie 01-31-2009 10:39 AM

Kyiav10 01-31-2009 10:59 AM

Do I have this right?? In stead of cutting the 9 patch in the center you would cut from corner to corner in an X then arrange them?? How neat!

Kyia

Kyia

Kyia...you DO cut the D9P across, but then you add another square of contrasting fabric I did opposite corners the same to each quarter of the now cut into four D9P...then stitch and slash into two....you following me ????

Mplsgirl 01-31-2009 11:08 AM

Very pretty!

sewjoyce 01-31-2009 01:23 PM
