I don't do applique very much because it just takes SO LOOOONNNNGGG!!! All the rest of the quilt blocks are done, have been done for a couple of weeks, and everything is waiting on this block getting done.

Just a bunch of berries left to do and I'll do them in a yo-yo style with a cardboard template. Something I did with the stems is use fusable though you can't tell. I made the stems using pressing bars so they're actually two layers of fabric. I then cut tiny strips of fusable, fused them to the background fabric, then fused the stems in place. It's just enough to hold them in place while I hand sew them without the bother of pins.

Very nice. I need to learn to applique. I have a quilt that has a lot of insects on different blocks that I want to try, but need experience first.

I find that very interesting that you used the fusible to secure the stems.....smart! Did you needleturn the rest of the things? Whatever you did, it sure looks nice. But yes, applique is time consuming......beautiful, but time consuming.....

I figured that since there are two layers, and the fusible is attached to the bottom layer, that it wouldn't be obvious at all and it's not. I used tiny strips of fusible, maybe 1/8" to 1/4" wide and maybe 1/2" long and spaced them out over the area. I just wanted to hold it in place.

I think it will be a good way to do the berries. They will be gathered into a circle and the fusible will be on the back side of them.

I used a mix of needle turn and basting. I turned under and basted the large pieces like the vase and the birds.
