Have you ever gotten far into a project that ended up being more than you really wanted to do, but because you had invested so much time and money into it there was no turning back? Quilting the 195 squares was fun and quick thanks to chain piecing, but I got about a quarter of the way into snipping the seam allowances on this rag quilt before I realized I had made it way too big. I do not recommend making one this large (52 x 60 inches) unless you have bandaids for the blisters you'll get from the scissors. Or maybe I just don't have the right tools. But it's finished and it's gorgeous. :D
Made with five Moda charm packs on the front side, Bella Solids on the back, and flannel in the middle instead of batting. |
That is so pretty. I'm glad you finished it

And it is gorgeous! Oh my gosh, all that clipping! Hope your blisters are better!
It's beautiful though!
I like it! The finished product makes it all worth while.

Very pretty...with arthritic fingers, I've been afraid to try one...maybe wisely...but, it sure is pretty!
Very nicely done. I did the same thing and NOW I only make them the size of a baby quilt. You might want to try some of the newer scissors that are made for snipping the seam allowances. You did finished it and it's gorgeous !!! CONGRATULATIONS !!!!

Nice job! I've made a lot of rag quilts in the past. I start with a 10" block, and a 8" batting. So by the time I sew the rows together, it is 7 x 9 blocks (56x72). Larger blocks than what you've done here.
There are 'rag quilt snips' available. They really do make a difference. I leave my quilt on my ironing board and I make a rule, cut 1/2 of a block every time I pass it. Cant believe how many times I pass by within one afternoon. Usually will take me a day or two to finish. |
Wow! I'm getting ready to start 2 of these for my grandsons. What did you do that made the clipped parts so white? Did you use batting? I was just planning use flannel for the front and back, with no batting, but I really like the white effect you got here.

Well, at least you've got a very nice quilt for the frustration. Now, go have a picnic on it somewhere where you can relax. You deserve it.
I understand why you wanted to quit, but it's sooo worth it! Beautiful.
I love it! It makes me want to curl up in it :)
Love it!! Turned out great! I'd love to make a rag quilt for my bed sometime, but I'm not ready for that much snipping yet!
I made several rag quilts before it was brought to my attention that I should have been using spring-loaded rag quilt scissors.....DOH!!!! I purchased a small and large pair using my Jo-Ann's 50% off coupons. Let me tell you they were like a dream to use on this type of quilt. I have since made two more and not a single blister and no sore hand, wrist or arm either. Your rag quilt is very pretty. I love the colors you used.
It is beautiful !!! Love the colors !!
Well, it looks like I need to get some of those fancy schmancy spring loaded scissors! Because I really like the way these rag quilts look and I really want to make more.
Thanks for all the compliments :D |
LOVE the quilt! A rag quilt is on my to do list. I already have the 4" square of batting cut. Not sure what fabric I want to use. Maybe a scrappy one! Yours is beautiful.

I don't have one, but there is a special tool for snipping them. My friend who only does rag quilts bought it at JoAnn's.
I really like your rag quilt.
