Your quilt is breathtaking. I think either way you do it will be fine. Use whichever method is most comfortable for you.

Depends. If you are confident in keeping it aligned, a measrued long strip is good. If you worry abouf aligning, cornerstones are a useful tool.

You have enough action going with the blocks so I would go with whole strips.

Definitely whole strips of the black -- you can line it up properly, just use lots of pins and check, check, check often. The blocks should be the focus and with the black strips, they will be.

I would make smaller blocks (same way you made the larger ones - or the reverse) and use those as cornerstones....not just because you won't have the longer piece of sashing, but mainly because it would be a more interesting design overall.
