I didn't use that pattern but did one similar to that by following a youtube tutorial and it didn't work out to what I watched and had to adjust of course...The amount of fabric you need for the you tube tutorial is more than what she suggests and if you look at the amount she uses in the video it looks to be more than she mentions...

Beautiful! I had similar problems with one of my border prints when trying the Triangle Frenzy pattern, so I understand your issue. You solved it wonderfully!
