Piecing and Quilting Myths
In my experience -
A log cabin block is a good choice for a beginner - not! Pot holders are easy - not! Cutting squares the "exact" size for HST units - even sewing "very scant" seams - the units always turned out skimpy. Anything that you have "heard" was supposed to be "easy" - but that you did - and perhaps still do - have difficulty with? |
It's not a quilt unless it's hand quilted. - definitely not!
Quilting is a cheap hobby using scrap clothes. - not! I'm sure more will come to mind. This is a good idea. |
Totally agree about log cabin blocks and HST's! One log cabin quilt was enough for me. Now, HST's on the other hand...love stars so I've learned to live with them, lol.

Stippling is the easiest, best way for a beginner to quilt...NOT (at least for me)
|
'Quilting by cheque' is 'not real quilting'--Is Too!!
Only LQS quality cotton fabric should be used in a quilt--Not! I have seen very nice quilting fabrics at regular fabric stores and some--dare I say less quality--fabric at some LQSes. |
Depends where the quilt is going...do they have cats, dogs or it is a baby quilt which will be washed over and over and very often. Then I decide whether I will hand quilt or machine. They love them no matter what.

I made a baby quilt out of polyester way back when for her and hand quilted for a grand daughter when she was a baby and her late middle 20's and she still has it but I've repaired it so many times the darn thing is practically all machine stitching but she won't give it up. Never did it again. I always used cotton but teacher in the class I took said it's just for a baby so use polyester. Live and learn.

Totally agree about the 'easiness' of a log cabin quilt. One of those was enough for me. I love the pattern but dread the thought of making another one.
"Great pattern for a beginner."........ ALWAYS take that with a grain of salt. What I think is a beginner pattern is quite different from what someone else may think. |
I did a log cabin as a beginner and didn't have any issues. why would a log cabin not be good for a beginner?
|
Seam width does not matter as long as it is consistent.
That is partially true - but does not work out well for all blocks. |
