Thread storage/organization?
 

Hey all,

I would like some ideas on how you store and organize your sewing thread? Not embroidery thread but regular thread for a DSM. Thanks.

I mostly use thread from Connecting Threads and use a plastic case that they sell. It holds my thread perfectly and holds quite a lot.

I have 4 of the boxes they sell at joanns the lids open from both sides and lock when closed. I waited till they were 50 percent off so they were a good deal and they hold a lot.

I have a 13 drawer plastic cabinet so I can divide my thread by size and type. I rainbow the colors in each drawer. I can see at a glance what I have. I also use a lot of cone thread which I just line up on a shelf.

I have those peg things (can't think of the name) with the pegs that hold a lot. They are on the wall, easily seen but out of sunlight. Works great. I think JAF carries them.

One of the deep, hinged JAF boxes, bought with 50% off works for me. I use mostly cones with either 1100 meters or 5000 meters of 50 weight thread. Most are Aurifil thread, although some are from Connecting Threads and who knows where I got the others from. I need the larger size box for the larger cones. When I change threads, I put the thread cone and the bobbins in a ziplock sandwich thread and keep them together in the box. (There's 3 of the boxes...I have bought too much thread.) I do keep the deco bob 90 weight in a smaller box.

FYI.... I'm finding out that I use mostly, black, gray, light & darker beige and white for piecing. I'm trying to use up all the yellow, reds, blues, oranges and so many other pretty colors.

Depends on how much thread you have. I have 2 plastic container carry boxes (Joann's) to keep all my thread. Keeps it dust free. Some specialty threads are kept in ziplocks in an open box. Some folks prefer their thread on a board hanging up and that is fine, but you need a cover because dust will soil your quilt.

I have a sewing desk with drawers.
Any threads that have been opened/used are stored in it.
Left drawer has polyesters. Right drawer has cottons
Bobbins with thread are attached to the matching spool with a bobbin buddy or a those hairpin" style joiner.

My thread stash of unused spools are in a set of shallow wooden drawers, just deep enough to hold the spools on their sides. Makes for easy to see the colours of what are there.

Each drawer holds a different brand/type of thread.

I have two thread racks from Walmart on wall by only window in the room. No sunlight ever touches them. I have lots of thread and the rest are in various containers in cabinets.
