I am making my quilts with 1.5" unfinished squares - one quilt for the daily highs and one quilt for the daily lows. I have 8 temperature ranges defined for my city. I bought 1/4 yard of the less common temperature ranges - mainly because that was the minimum I could buy. I probably could have gotten away with just 1/8 yard for some of them. For my most common temperature range I ended up buying 1/3 yard.

That's a cool idea qltnmom. I think I'll see if daily high and low temps from the 1950's are available for Chicago (where I was born) and Richmond (where I've lived since '68). If I do that I'll not do the half square triangle thingy that I'm doing for this one, it's looking nice, but it doesn't really tell the story of changing temps very well.

I love this idea. Originally I planned to keep track of high and low temperatures, but then decided I would be overwhelmed at the end of the year with 365 blocks. I decided to make 2 1/2" unfinished HSTs in a zigzag pattern with highs the top triangle and lows on the bottom. Then i added a 3/4" finished strip on the bottom depicting the weather (snow, rain, sun, partly sunny, etc.)
I have temp increments in 5 degrees, ranging from 0 degrees to 100 degrees, starting with blue (3 shades from dark to light), green. yellow, orange, red. If it goes over 100, I'll use red/orange/yellow flames. That's possible in my Chicago area home.
I have Jan. and Feb. sewn together and March blocks ready to sew together. I took a picture, but am unable to download it from my camera.
