I have always shared recipes if I can and am asked. It paid off. In 2010 our utility company had a huge gas line explosion that destroyed 38 homes, including ours. Everything we owned was gone. One of the great gifts I received from friends was copies of recipes I had shared with them. Sharing really helped us recover.

Blackberry your cream cheese icing sounds great. Does it set up and dry so it won't stick to other cookies when stacked up and packaged? I'm making packages of cookies for my family for Christmas and would like to try this recipe. Thanks for sharing it. Mary

thank you everyone for your frosting recipes, now I am excited to have a few new ones to try out. I also share recipes. Where would we be if "someone" had not shared their recipe with us?? I have a few written family recipes from my grandmother and mother that I cherish. The best thing is that they are written in their handwriting and so I feel them baking next to me every time I use them. Thanks again everyone! You are all the best!

I saw the recipe for Royal Icing in a cookbook so I was planning to make it, then I decided $5.00 was too much for powdered meringue when I only need 1 or 2 tablespoons a year. I doubt there is a substitute, so I'll just mix powdered sugar, butter, milk and food color like I've done for 50 yrs.

Recipe I use that can be piped or spread. Everybody seems to like it. Great for cookies or cakes. Will dry stiff . Add more milk if you want thinner frosting if using decorating bags with tips. Will frost a 9x13 cake and about 4 dozen cookies.
1 bag powdered sugar
1 cup crisco shortening
1 tsp vanilla
2 tsp butter flavoring
9 Tbls milk
1 bag powdered sugar
1 cup crisco shortening
1 tsp vanilla
2 tsp butter flavoring
9 Tbls milk

I bought the pre-colored royal icing in a squeeze bottle..by Wilton. Found it at Walmart. My Walmart has a large section of Wilton along with a Christmas section in the Christmas area. I decided to make rolled cookies this year..bought cookie cutters etc. I am no artist! I cannot color either. The Wilton website has a no-chill rolled cookie recipe that is wonderful. I watched some You Tube videos on how to make rolled, iced cookies using royal icing ( it hardens) We have been gobbling up the cookies! Having fun and a few laughs at my progress!

I Googled to find a substitute, it said something about heating egg whites to prevent salmonella - That's when I quit reading. Due to personal experience in our family, I want nothing to do with that risk and will gladly fork over 5.00 if needed !

Pasteurized eggs are suggested as safe to consume raw and are readily available. When it comes to food safety, do what you feel comfortable with. The meringue powder cost is inexpensive compared to a trip to the emergency room and well worth your peace of mind.
Enjoy a few cookies for me. They're on my no no list and I need to stop looking at these threads.
