Actually, egg whites can easily be used. I forget the exact exchange, but I am sure you can google it. I used to make it all the time. I made it with egg whites before I knew about meringue powder. I think meringue powder is the substitute for egg whites.
I Googled to find a substitute, it said something about heating egg whites to prevent salmonella - That's when I quit reading. Due to personal experience in our family, I want nothing to do with that risk and will gladly fork over 5.00 if needed !
