Default Searching for an old Applesauce Cake recipe....

I'm searching for an old Applesauce Cake recipe from the mid 40's. It was in the BH&G Cookbook which was the first cookbook I had as a new bride. Over the years that cookbook had lots of wear and tear and finally fell, yes, actually fell apart and I tossed it thinking I could buy a new BH&G Cookbook and have it again. Didn't happen as that same recipe is not in the new books. It was one of my husbands favorite cakes through the years and now I'd like to have a copy of the recipe to hand down to our family. A big thanks to anyone who can help me. DottienTX

My cook book dated from the early '60's, but here is the Applesauce Cake recipe that was in it -- hope it ie the right one:
Applesauce Cake
1/2 cup butter or marg
2 cups sugar
2 eggs
2 1/2 cups flour
1 1/2 teaspoon soda
1 teaspoon sale
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
1 1/2 cups canned applesauce
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 cup chopped pecans
Cream butter; gradually add sugar, creaming till light. Add eggs, beating well after each. Sift together dry ingredients. Add aalternately to creamed mixture with applesauce. Stir in raisins and nuts. Turn batter into greased and lightly floured 13x9x2 inch pan. Bake 350 degrees about 45 minutes or till done. Cool in pan.

This recipe is from my late mother:
3 C plain flour
3/4 C butter - softened
2 1/4 C sugar
3 eggs
1 can applesauce (or 1 1/2 C)
1/2 C warm water
1 1/2 T. EACH soda, vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon
1 1/2 C chpped dates
1 1/2 C chopped nuts (pecans)

Use standard mixing procedure for cakes - cream butter and sugar, etc...
Bake in a latge tube pan or 2 loaf pans for approx. 90 minutes at 300 degrees

Don't know where the recipe originated, but we ate this through my childhood and I am 60 now! The cakes freeze well.

This is from my mom's (used, falling apart BH&G cookbook) probably 1955, the year her and dad were married. I've not made this but this is how it is printed in the book! Maybe this is close to the one you want
Applesauce Cake
1/2 c. shortening
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 beaten eggs
1 c. thick, unsweetened applesauce
2 c. flour
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
1 c. chopped, seeded raisins
Thoroughly cream shortening and sugar; add eggs and beat well. Add applesauce, then sifted dry ingredients. Beat smooth and fold in raisins. Bake in waxed-paper-lined 8 inch square pan in 350* oven for 45 to 60 minutes. Serve plain or frosted. This cake will remain moist several days in closely covered container.

My gosh, I think that is it. It didn't have a lot of various spices in it, was baked in an 8" square pan and no nuts. Of course you can leave nuts out of anything can't you??? ;-D I thank you so much for going to the trouble to look in an old cook book for me. I liked that recipe as it wasn't too big for the two of us to eat within a few days. Company always seemed to enjoy it but that was back in a simpler time. I'll be trying out the recipe one day this week. You're a dear. People in this site always come through for any of us. Thanks again!

Thanks to both QuiltLady1 and fayeberry for replying to my request. I think I have it as Kathyd had the recipe. It was just a 8" square pan size and didn't call for a lot of spicee. Both your recipes sounded good and will be trying them out in the near future. You'll not believe how long I've been searching for this recipe and the 'light blulb' in my brain lit up a few days ago - why didn't I ask the gals on our quilter's blog. We can always depend on this great group of gals/guys.

Saw that you were looking for an Applesauce Cake recipe. Wasn't really looking for one myself, but thought I would look any way. I like old recipes. The recipes sound so good, that I think I will be trying them myself. Thanks everyone for sharing.

Seems like no matter what you ask for, someone here either has it or knows how to get it. I love this site and the people on it.

My mom used to make a recipe for this from one of the local newspapers in the late 1960's or early 70'. I sure wish that I had that recipe. It was easy and great. Alas, we have not been able to find it while cleaning out her house. I lost Mom just over 2 years ago. Sure wish I could talk to her. Miss her much.
