Wow! Then I am really doin' a happy dance over the one I got yesterday for $50.00! A 500A with cabinet in great condition.

To me the 500A is the ultimate Singer to own. It was made in 1962 and it was well ahead of its time and will hang with any of these machines they have now. I have one and its amazing the built in stitches it has and how you can vary them with just a click of a knob. Then if you really want to go for broke you can get the cams for it and have 10 or so different looks per cam.

My legs are too long, I have to sit with one leg out and one in and treadle with one foot :P :P

Ok, I tried one foot -- very hard for me. I found I can treadle better if I use one foot and just the toe of my left foot!

Geeze, I train horses -- you'd think I could treadle!

Anyway, my husband was running around today and went to an local antique emporium and found a Red Eye treadle in pristine shape for $800! Geeze, isn't that high? I thought the Red Eye was manufactured quite extensively? Anyway, I want the machine!

If it is still in the factory shipping box from Singer 1910, $800 would be discussable.

But, if it has one scratch on it, anywhere, it is only worth as much as you want to pay for the cabinet.

Buy for the cabinet, not the machine, in this case. If the cabinet is absolutely no doubt PERFECT, I would pay $100 to $150 for the whole thing, machine and all.

Oh, and for $150, it had better be my most favorite cabinet style.

If the machine is absolutely PERFECT, I would pay up to $80 for the machine, and it had better have slide plates, bobbins, a lot of accessory feet, etc. Because, there are a lot of nearly perfect machines in cabinets out there for $40-$80 all included.

This is my opinion after only three months of treadle browsing on CL. If I am crazy, well, forgive me.

Wow! So even if the machine is pristine along with the cabinet -- the cabinet is the more important factor?

Boy, am I learning! I do want a Red Eye one of these days, but not for $800!
