I want to do one of these style pictures so bad in a modern version. I would also hang the quilts over my porch and put my children in a row. I have doen [ictures with teh chidlren set up boys from oldest to youngest next to papa and the girls next to me but no sewing machine or quilts in it yet.

OMG. What a trophy. He is so proud that he could provide his family with a sewing machine...

That is what I thought too. I love the photo! The machine most likely cost more than his house. Thanks for sharing.

I would love to hear the story of that family. It looks like the Dad and Mother are sitting. The eldest daughter is holding the baby girl and the boy on the side sitting could be her husband. The little girl next to the young man? The house is actually pretty large for a thatch house. I bet they got the sewing machine shortly before the pictures were taken. I find it fasinating that the girls are wearing white -- it has to be all of their Sunday best!

My Singer coffin top treadle came to me missing the machine
mounting pins(obtained already) and the oil drip pan.
My son,Steve, fabricated a new one for me. The pictures are the last 6 in the coffin top treadle cabinet album.

Okay here is the latest acquisition to my collection (I think :roll: ) an 1876- 1880's FC Henderson sewing machine. It has the automatic tensioner that was patented by Wilcox and Gibbs and was made available to other manufacturers in that era. This is the first time I have ever seen this name of machine but it is just like the Wanamaker, Eldridge, W&G, and a few others that sold this type of machine. The decals on this machine are complete and in perfect condition and after a test cleaning this machine will be museum quality!

Since the machine is in a homemade case I am going to put it on my 1870's W&W treadle I just restored and will make the cabinet along with the coffin top for the machine. One of these days I hope to find the right treadle and cabinet for the machine if I do not turn around and sell it first.
