Scrappy quilts

I think scrappy quilts take you back to the roots of quilting. When quilting was a necessity and not a hobby. Reminds me of the days when you could pretty much take any quilt in the house and tell where/what item of clothing each block came from. I like scrappy.

Go to Quiltville.com and check out Bonnie Hunter's quilts. Her quilts are all scrappy and absolutely beautiful. Bonnie does a Mystery Quilt every year and here is mine from last year. It has all kinds of scraps in it.

I love and make scrappy quilts not only because I love the way they look, they challenge me to think about color and contrast. When I run out of fabric, I don't panic and can easily substitute another. I use my scraps for big and small projects, and it feels quite good to make a bed quilt and not to have spent money on the top! My scrap quilts are the favorites amongst my family and friends, and we have fun playing "eye-spy".
They are fun to make, freeing, are a great opportunity to learn from.

It seemed as if life was sweeter back then and one could sleep well and wake refreshed after sleeping under those quilts. These memories are the reasons I prefer scrappy quilts.

I loved that the quilts on my Gma's beds were made from things that were loved in the past in another form. I had favorite patches in them and could still find them today after 50+ years. Appeals to the thrifty side of me too. I didn't spend $18.00 a yard to cut it up and put it back together.

I adore scrap quilts! Gives us opportunity to use the leftovers from other projects. We pay for all of it, why not use all of it? And we don't kill ourselves making them. Most are kind of mindless sewing so they can be used rather than hidden away and only used for special occasions.

I am fasinated with the concept of color!~ and the beautiful ways colors work together. There is challenge to scrappy to make them their best. I love many styles of quilts- I like traditional and antique quilts probably the very best and they were often scrappy. I guess I love color and fabric!
