Thanks for the help on my slipping treadle belt. It's old and the leather has gotten really slick on the outside. Do you think it would be of any value to maybe rub some fine sandpaper along the belt, to roughen it up again? Or not worth the bother?
I will shorten it and connect with a few passes of dental floss...

Very cool machine to play with! Great for quilting and sewing on the binding. The only Davis that takes standard needles, 15 x1, is the Davis NVF.
Trish's cabinet is gorgeous!!! Trish do you already own a Davis Vertical Feed or is this your first?
That is so cool... I had no idea those had no feed dogs. Always wondered what was meant by "vertical feed". Thanks for the video. :D

Linda, "vertical feed" machines have no feed dogs. The fabric is moved along by the needle and presser foot. :)

The cabinet to the Universal is in and cleaned. The head is in the car baking to loosen the ZZ knob, as per miriam's suggestion. I should have oiled it first, but I am not going to carry it up the stairs twice. It's easier to find a place to sit for it with the cabinet empty. So far no luck.
You all make me want to treadle. I didn't get my answer - what do I use to loosen the tight irons on the Leader?

There must have been a Davis Dealer around here years ago because they are croping up at a lot of the auctions around here. DH loves the cabinets and 3 of ours are different. That's why so many. We have a machine that looks like yours.

From our experience we usually cut about 1/2 inch and then if not right you can cut more. Can't every add any back if to short.
