Whether a person likes quilts or not isn't that important. Everyone appreciates gifts made by the giver. It shows a lot more thought and care than anything you can just go out and buy.
Have you looked at some of the old Mexican blankets? They're generally woven with brightly colored striped patterns. A pattern like that may make an interesting quilt as well.

"Karen K. Stone Quilts" has quite a few quilt patterns in her books that have Mexican colors in them. Many are New York Beauty style blocks and paper pieced. Even her larger quilts could be fairly easily shrunk down to a wall hanging size.
I just checked out the site posted by Rodney. Click on the "where to buy" on the right side. The multiple blankets hanging together would make a neat design to piece solids together to make a modern quilted hanging.

Actually, go get a good photo of Monument Valley Tribal Park and some of the Hopi villages.
Match the colors and you have southwestern. I like those colors, myself. Shocked an instructor by matching southwestern colors in a Celtic Quilt. Use in any quilt pattern you like.
