if it seems like a complete mystery maybe you can turn the machine upside down and give a gentle shake. Maybe there's a broken needle tip that needs to come free.

LOL!!! I did just that !! I also gave it a good oiling and grease and lubricant...........

I had the same problem and then found out that I had the hand wheel loosened in the 'fill bobbin' position. Yes, my face turned red.
