Sassysews, I would think that your SO is the same one I live with except that mine never leaves the house!! It is sad that we might have to hide purchases, but I've also been in the situation where it was necessary to keep the peace. Hiding is a small price to pay for that.

I don't hide anything from my DH (except gifts, of course). If anything, he's an enabler, and I usually have to remind him that we have to stay within the budget.
I know someone that felt she had to hide EVERYTHING from her husband, especially financial matters. She'd lie, "lie by omission", hide the mail, get phone calls that she wouldn't answer (bill collectors), and so on. He was a very nice guy, and always treated her well, so I don't know why she felt she had to keep secrets from him. Bankruptcy followed ... then divorce. She re-married, and again, she hid everything from her new husband. Five or six years later ... divorce and bankruptcy. She's dating someone else now, and you can guess what she's doing ... AGAIN! This time she's actually having her mail routed to a different address so her boyfriend won't see it.
I couldn't live that way. I guess I just don't see how hiding things, especially IMPORTANT things, from one's spouse can be beneficial to the marriage.

Last city elections, I put my candidate sign in our yard and DH put his candidate sign on the the other side of the yard. No I didn't ask and he didn't either. He put up his because his friend was running for sheriff and he had the sign in his car and forgot about it until he saw mine. He said he told his friend he would display it and he did. I said that's nice. He said your sign is better made then my sign. We talked about the signs and never said one word about the candidates. LOL

I wouldn't do something like that without checking with my husband first, just as I would expect him to check with me before doing something that reflected on me as well as on himself. If there were some reason he didn't want a sign displayed, that would be more important to me than showing support for a school board candidate.

I do not hide fabric, DH smokes and drinks and I like fabric, and as I make as much retirement as he does, and with cost of his medical ins for his problems (CA) I make more so while I hold back if we can't afford, I do not hide, just don't have much more room to store it or sew.
