How can we save this log cabin?

I think I'd like it a little better without the sashing, but since the cuts are a bit off I'd put it in to hide the little off-ness-es. Especially since the colors and patterns go so well together (your friend has good taste, by the way) I think it looks good now and will look even better when finished!

I would trim each block to the same size and put them together in a different setting so that those centers aren't together. The centers not lining up would bother me. If the blocks are rearranged, no one would ever know that the center squares aren't the same size. Not putting on the sashing would just make the finished quilt a little smaller. She could always add borders to make it bigger if wanted.

I would not sash in white. It will draw attention to any problems. If the sashing is needed for size, think darker. Maybe something that uses all the main colors. Or, just square up all the blocks, sew together and work out the size with borders. But, I think the most important thing is to let her know that almost all problems are fixable (just maybe in a weird way!) and that it is okay. This is how we all learned! She can still buy precuts, just make sure she buys from trusted sources and companies. Does she have a quilter's group in her area that she could team up with and get assistance with her cutting? Also, if she is new, her 1/4" seams might also have been a tad off - practice, practice, practice.

I like it better without the sashing. The white sashing takes to much away from the beautiful blocks. She could arrange the blocks to make a different pattern & the off set of some of the blocks wouldn't show. For instance, turn the right hand top block & the left hand bottom block where the light blue points out & the other two points in. I can never fallow a pattern perfectly. I just have to change something in it one way or another. Tell her to hang in there as it will be a beautiful quilt.

If you square the solid squares you will have to square up all the blocks to the same size surely? Would it not be easier if the log cabin blocks are 8" to buy fabric to make new solid squares.
I would let the seller know of the omission of sashing. I wouldn't bother to put any sashing on as the pattern looks fine without.

I think this is a good solution.
