    Default Question on Gifting Quilts

I love to sew, love fabric and to just create. However, I am losing my enthusiasm in making quilts. People do not look at your creation the same way you intend. I want to make a baby quilt for my second great grandchild. I know babies do not get covered up in their cribs. Do mothers really use the quilts made for their babies? I am also noticing, non quilters do not look at the designs of the blocks, but are attracted to the colors of the fabrics. Any suggestions or thoughts would be appreciated.

My DIL used the baby quilts she got. They don't cover the babies in cribs (suffocation hazard), but they were used for floor quilts for wiggle time and to throw over car seats for warmth. They wrapped up the babies when transporting them to and from the car. As the babies got older, the girls liked to be covered with the quilts for naps. I do agree the color and fabrics are the most interesting thing to a non-quilter.

They remember the thought also. My daughter and I made a quilt 20 years ago for a nephews baby that I have never seen since that baby shower day. At a family funeral, last year we met again. His wife went on and on about the quilt we made. My daughter and I had forgotten all about it, but it brought back happy memories at a sad time.

Since the quilts cannot be used in a baby's bed initially, they can only be used as decoration in the nursery. So, yes, the moms will want a certain color theme. Best to ask mom what the theme will be. Later they can be used for tummy time on the floor and hopefully, when the child is old enough it will be in a bed and drug it around as a lovey. Times change and you can still make quilts that will be loved, but in a different way than you may be used to. With car seats and strollers moms want a smaller quilt. Best bet is to talk with mom, see what will work. My daughter really liked the pretty minkees combined with flannel.

i like them for laying on the floor time. non quilters have no idea what goes into one. i've gotten some great results from people and some that think it's just a blanket.

I worker in a prevention program for over 20 years The national sids foundation suggests that nothing be place in bed with a baby no blankets, just a warm sleeper and a tight fitting sheet . No bumper pads I have seen the tragedies that occur and yes quilts can cause suffocation babies can not get them out of the way as we can. They are mostly used as decoration or as tummy time quilts on the floor.

I prefer to make a quilt for a child when they graduate from the crib. A youth bed quilt is appreciated then.

I totally agree I make play mats for babies. I saw one first hand a darling baby that was snuggled into a beautiful quilt. No the way I want to see my quilt 's life end. OR my grandchilds.

I made a quilts for a friend's daughters children ( 3 quilts) when the son of one friend had a baby I made a quilt. Later he stopped me and asked me to make a quilt for his new daughter. These children used their quilts to lie on, play on etc as babies. As they got older they used them to make dens. The mums and the new dad all said they were great.
