Sorry for replying to an old post, but does this mean you don't baste before tying?

i don't baste before tying, but make sure that the quilt is smoothed very well, or even taped down

I use 4 boards 1x2, measure the quilt size and hold the boards with C-clamps, use thumb tacks to hold backing to boards, place batting, then the top also attach to boards with thumb tacks. Place boards on chairs, boxes, or stands made for them. As you tie as much as you can reach from each side, take off 2 clamps and roll the boards toward the center...continue until it is done.

When I would tie a quilt I used 2 tv trays and then sat in the middle so I had an area for one hand under and one above.
