I too press my seams open about 99 % of the time. I starch and use a 1.5 or 1.8 stitch length and if I think it might open, I will also do a little back stitch.

Like tallchick, I press my seams open often and reduce the stitch length.

Thank you all so much for all your comments. I decided to press my seams open and am very happy how flat the blocks are at the center. So glad I asked. So glad my blocks are coming out well. As always you all have helped so much.

In all of these comments, I don’t see any mention of trimming the HST square. I know you're talking about pressing open or to the dark side, here, but if you trim your HST's square, you end up cutting through your stitching often, which can cause the seam end to open and or defeat the backstitch efforts. I love HST quilts, but hate making HST's because of the trimming. Before I learned to square up my HSTs my quilts didn’t go together as easy, nor did the HSTs stay flat because there was that little bit of excess.

I cut my hst using the Go die cut. There is a die for every size I I have needed so far. No need to trim them up unless I veer from the 1/4 inch. In the past I use to trim each one and it sure wasted a lot of my time.

I like trimming my HST's with the Bloc Loc ruler.

When I'm working with HST, I press some toward the light and the other half towards the dark so they nest properly.
