I think they're fun. I agree with thread painting some grass under them if you don't like the floating effect, or the raffia nest idea.

VERY cute! I do see what you mean about the chickens "floating in space", but maybe do some meandering or pebbling beneath their feet in black or one of the colors in the fabrics to blend it in so it looks like feed on the ground?

Just a thought, but I don't see that it really needs it, and it may blend in anyway once it's quilted.

I love it just like it is. But then the sewing green grass under them is cute too.
What an adorable quilt.....Now I need to add that one on my bucket list.....
