I have one block of a Mariner's Compass (not paper-pieced) that I made in a class more than 20 years ago. I take it out every now and then thinking I might finish the other three blocks, but I no longer have the same fabric. Then I have a bunch of string-pieced blocks that I add to now and again until I'll have enough for a top. And I have a full-sized paper-pieced top for which I haven't been able to decide what type of borders should go on it. At least I know I'll never run out of stuff to do.

UFOs happen to me when I have made mistakes that I don't know how to correct (I have a dress sitting in a bag now because I don't know how to finish it)....or when I get interrupted by another "gotta finish it now" project....or because the project just isn't turning out like I thought it would (my wannabe king size cathedral window from denim circles)....I will eventually get them all done....sometimes I have to work them in between current projects.....my biggest downfall is my girls....they are non-stop in their requests...."Mom, can you make crib bumpers and a quilt for me, just like this pic?"...."Mom, can you make me two bow tucks to give as gifts?"...."Mom, can you make a new canopy for for Eliza's bed, no I don't have a pattern"....."Mom....." LOL I can't win.

I've taken a bunch of classes and didn't finish the projects. I've stopped working on some projects when I got stuck on something and didn't know how to fix things. I go months without sewing, sadly due to work and other things. I underestimate how much time I realistically have to get things done. But I hope to get better!

My local guild has a silent auction of fabrics, notions, UFO's etc. at one meeting each year. It's called "Get this out of my sight!" Your castaways can go to a loving home and the guild makes some money!! O.urs is in January, and I'm filling an entire box of stuff.

I don't consider random single blocks to be UFOs. Every so often I want to see what a block looks like put together, or how certain fabrics work together so I'll make a single block. Maybe one day, when there are enough, I'll make an orphan quilt but maybe not.

My one UFO is a mystery quilt of Christmas fabric. It's a UFO because it's low on my priority list.

My DH just asked me today "Whatcha makin now?" My reply "Its not what I'm making, its what I'm finally finishing". Theres around 15 to 20 on going projects in my pile at various stages. When the inspiration subsides they are laid aside till it returns. Staying with a quilt from start to finish is almost unheard of here unless its a small project. There are times when I wish for the ability to stick to it, but I feel like they wouldn't finish as nicely. Its like a fine wine, it needs age and a little air to make it sweet.

I have 3 quilts that are all basted and ready to quilt- not sure what design to quilt.
2 baby quilt tops that have to have backs pieced and then basted and then figure out how to quilt them.
1 baby quilt in the process of piecing- sort of a sampler to use up the fabric in a particular line. It's a little more daunting so it's in a bag.
Twister quilt that I started and got put aside.
Bom that I have all the blocks made, but need to piece the center portion so it can be assembled (from 2009)
A Christmas quilt I started in 2010
Many more projects that I have bagged up and ready to start.
Don't ask about sewing projects that hit a snag and are in a bag somewhere. I think that I will challenge myself to finishing at least 6 quilting UFOs, 6 sewing UFOs and organizing my sewing room for this year. I also have set a deadline on finishing my Lighthouse quilt for the lake house by June 1st. I also want to make my mother a quilt and have it done by her birthday which is May 30. I also have to make a baby quilt for a baby boy that was born earlier this month- probably have to design it myself too. That's will be the first thing to do.

My two longest running UFO's are due to their overwhelming complexity. One is "My Cats Garden" that is all needle-turned applique. I started it as a new quilter well over 10 years ago. There are nine blocks. I have finished 7 of them. Once I finish a block the entire project gets put back in the box for another year, as I just can't face another complicated cat for awhile. The other is a finished hand appliqued top that is king-sized, pristine white background and I'm determined to hand quilt. I have four cats. How white do you think that quilt is going to stay considering how long it's going to take to hand quilt it? The other UFO's are more current and manageable. I have three very close friends that I want to do quilts for. I picked fabrics and patterns and started all three of them, because how do you decide which friend gets priority? Now I have three fun quilt tops to piece depending on my mood at the time! They probably aren't considered UFO's if they are just material and a pattern in a drawer, the material not even washed yet. I've lost count of how many of those I have collected. I quilt for fun! If it's not fun, what's the point?
