My Darling? Husband
#222
ps
My hubby loves me sewing because I used to be the one in the living room crocheting and missing him in his hobby room or out in his toolshed.
Now I computer and sew in my own room....works for us.
We watch tv and read the paper together in the mornings. We shop together, have our meals together, run errands and sleep together. That is enough. We need some space. Did I say he is retired????????

However I can only spread out fabric when I'm sure hubby is away or I'll be the brunt of some snarky little comments such as "Now I see your quilting is taking over the whole house". I have never understood how a little fabric on the table can be such a problem. He also doesn't like it when I fold laundry there. He fusses about someone "coming in" in and seeing it. I maintain it could be a lot worse than seeing and smelling clean laundry and fabric (I use lavender Best Press on my fabric and it smells heavenly). We will just never agree on this subject.

Wow, this topic has really stirred up some responses. I won't go through 15 pages before I give my response. I'll get to the rest in my un-sleeping hours. My hubby (of 48 years) never speaks against all the sewing -- I've always sewed. The first major "appliance" we purchased when we married was a sewing machine. He tolerates the sewing clutter, etc. The only thing he says occasionally is "Who's that for?" or When are you going to be finished? {{{{{{{{{{{teeheehee}}}}}}}}}}} He's gotten to where he comes with me to the LQS, but waits in the car. He even takes a nap if I'm a little long in the shop. He likes the casino, so when I go fabric shopping, I tell him I've been to my casino.
And as far as comment go, he asked a long time ago if I realized as the kids moved out on their own that I had filled their spaces with my projects. DS's room holds my cake-baking/decorating supplies in the closet, shelves of books, and the computer (which he shares). The girls' room is my sewing/scrapbooking/home office room. Much too small, BTW.

Have you asked him what he wants you to do now that you are through? Sometimes it helps to understand what his expectation is so you can address whether you will make that change or most likely NOT. Better to be direct than indifferent. Good luck.

AFter DH saw how important this was to me he always made sure I got to go to quilting shops on every trip we ever took. I worked full time for 35 years and enjoyed getting to drown myself in my sewing but my husband had decided he would never retire so I guess that is the reason he felt as he did at first. I think DH thought I would just work beside him until I died like he planned on doing but I knew I wanted some down time and did not want to work like he did. I think he though I should want what he wanted but he did not want what I wanted.
After we decided to really discuss what our differences were on my sewing and him watching TB we both seemed to enjoy each others down town. I began to watch some shows with him and he actually would come and sit in my sewing room and watching me. One Christmas morning I did not see a gift under our tree for me from him. He led me into my sewing room and there sat a brand new flat screen TB beautifully placed so we could watch TV together in the sewing room. Two nice comfortable chairs, table with lamp and of course my new TV which I could see from my machine or my chair. This just made me love him more. He did get how much I loved sewing and I did get how much he enjoyed relaxing with his TV. I guess he decided if he could'nt beat this situation he would join. I always seemed to enjoy TV more after all of this had been worked out.

I am so sorry your husband doesn't appreciate your hobbby.
Since we retired my husband would like to be attached to me at the hip. He has taken up reading more and will even offer to bring one of my machines into the family room so I can sew and watch tv with him. When we are in Maine he will even go to one of the stores I buy a lot of fabric from and tag alog carring the bolts, when I have most of it ready he willl get in the cutting line and tell them how much of each. I sometime think he enjoys it. I have offered to teach him how to sew but he will offer his opinion on colors but wants no part of sewing. He is very supportive and one time when were at a flea market and they had one of the white old featherweights. I said I did have one in my collection and he said he would buy it and this one it would be ""his". He does know where it is but would never touch it.
We have been together over 30 years and I tell me he is a keeper.

I am so suprised at the posts who's husbands have a negative attitude with sewing/quilting.
My DH is use to it as his whole family quilts (this is how I learned). So this was the enviorment he was reared in.
His aging sister now has alzheimers and I received her old quilting frames. I brought them home from her daughters house and DH happily unloaded them for me and took them downstairs.
We have respect for each others interests. He is into sports big time. When he goes to a game I am happy that he can go since this is his interest. He has no objections to my interests.
We are retired now and timing between us is working out fine!
