This is the exact same cabinet my mom had!!I remember begging her to buy the machine because it had a backstitch, and I could use the cabinet for a desk doing my homework. That sewing stool wads great too. Had a storage area. My niece now has the machine and cabinet, the stool was destroyed, but my hubby made me one just like it. I wish I had never let my niece have the machine, I'd love having it now, just for the memories.

What did you use to sand it...what type of sander?
.
It took me a while, but the stains are gone.

I sanded by hand, with a mouse sander and a regular, electric sander.
Just saying for some who may not know...
Sounds like the cabinet is a SOLID WOOD cabinet instead of a cabinet with a WOOD VENEER. I think if you did all that amount of sanding on a veneer it would have been a bigger disaster.

LOOKS GREAT!!! Wanna come work on some of my cabinets?

That last picture sure does have a very modern look to it.
And it would also look right at home in a restored 1940s home.
You did a very good job on the refinishing.

No, actually it isn't solid wood, but wood veneer. As long as you're careful, veneer can be sanded well. But, this cabinet will not withstand another refinishing.

Neat. I saw on the Singer site that it originally came with a stool.
