Sewline Pencil or Fons & Porter Ceramic Pencil? Pls. weigh in.

Just yesterday I went to Keepsake Quilting in New Hampshire looking for a marker to use on a black background quilt. Since F&P own the store now, there was a great selection of their stuff. Someone told me once before those are great markers, but they cost about $15. I bought a different brand for about $3, since I rarely need a white marker.

I haven't used the F&P pencils but have the Sewline pencil and all the color leads to interchange. I really like the narrow line it makes instead of chalk and other disappearing pens/pencils I've used.

Keepsake Quilting and her three sister shops weren't purchased by Fons & Porter, they were purchased by New Track Media, LLC...who also owns QNN TV, all the 'Original Sewing and Quilting Expos', multiple quilting and scrapbooking magazines (Quilters Newsletter, McCall's, F&P, Quiltmaker, etc), Quilters Club of America and a pile of other stuff. They are the largest crafts media business in the United States...after only 6 years.

The Keepsake founders retired and sold the business to The Riverside Company in 2000. New Track Media acquired it from Riverside in 2007. If you haven't noticed changes by now, it probably won't make much of a difference now that you know about it.

I have the Sewline pencil with three colors of lead in it - pink, white, and black. I love the way it makes a nice sharp, easy to see line, BUT, I just finished a quilt where I used the black lead on a red Moda fabric and it looks like it's not going to come out. Plain water did nothing to remove it, so it's in the washing machine. I checked it once while it was filling up for the rinse cycle and most of the lines are still there. If they are still visible after this washing, I'm going to try a stain remover and wash again.
Oh, and in case you are wondering, no I didn't iron over the lines.
Ugh! Live and learn.

Update to my post above: After the first wash I could still see the black marks from the Sewline pencil, yikes!, so I sprayed them all with Spray and Wash and washed again. Unfortunately, I could still see them after the second wash. Thinking I was stuck with them, I put the quilt into the dryer, BUT, it came out of the dryer with no marks whatsoever! Yay!!!
I bought a pack of washable Crayola markers yesterday and tried all 8 colors on some all cotton Moda fabric. The colors came out with plain water. I may try them on a "practice" quilt to see what happens.
