Help please!: What Size Should I Cut My Scraps?
#41
Similar to Bonnie Hunter is the scrap therapy patterns by Joan Ford. She also uses 2", 3 1/2" and 5" square. I have been teaching a class based on those sizes for over two years. We meet once a month most of the year and never seem to run out of projects that those sizes work with. I like the patterns that use 5" square because leftover charms can be used.

I leave mine and don't cut because you never know what you might need that piece for. At one time I did cut them into strips but decided that was not a good idea because I needed just a slightly bigger piece than I had cut.

Once you visit Quiltville it's hard to leave. Bonnie has free patterns for wonderful scrap quilts. She has a "system" for cutting scraps but like a lot of you, I want to know what quilt I want to make before cutting all my scraps. I'm too afraid a fabric I would really like to use in a certain quilt might not be cut to the right size if I go ahead and cut all my scraps certain sizes. I do LOVE strip quilts though, so more and more of my scraps are ending up in 2 1/2" strips.

I cut mine into the largest possible piece I can get out of it, and put any trimmings into a separate drawer. I very rarely have throw away. My thinking is I'd love to do one of those confetti things some day. Even the strings, threads and snips go out for the birds. I do have some specific drawers - 1", 1.5", 2", 1.5" strips at all lengths, but the rest is just sorted by light and dark.

I cut my left over scraps depending on the scrap size. I have cut mine in 4 1/2 or 5 inch squares, 3 inch squares, 2 1/2 inch strips or use thinner strips left over for a string quilt. I put my squares or strips into plastic bags labeling what they are and when I get enough, I make a quilt.
