If you want a very inexpensive machine that works wonderfully, the Janome 6500 is a workhorse. If you want to spend more....a Bernina. My opinion only. I will tell you, when no other machine I have will sew through many, many layers, the Janome never lets me down. I think, if you shop around, you can get one for about $1200. I purchased mine from Allbrands online, sent it right to my door. They even have payment plans if you need them. I have had this machine for 5 years and never had a single problem. I have used it to FM Quilt, has gobs of decorative stitches. The only thing is does have is the capability to accept an embroidery unit.
