New quilter wondering where I can find inexpensive fabric?

I agree about using the recycled clothing and yard sale finds. I LOVE that I can look at a quilt I made and see pieces of a garment that my mother-in-law or my children once wore. So, if you are a yard sale addict, like I am, don't just look for the pile of fabric someone is selling, glance at the .25 clothing items.
Using a flat sheet (could also be a yard sale find) for your quilt underside also saves a lot of money.

I am not a hoarder of anything including material. I buy enough material to quilt and then make it. When I am finished with that one I buy more material to quilt and finish. That way everything gets finished.

One of our regional WalMart stores sells decent fabric for $1.50 to $2.00 a yard along with more expensive fabric. I don't know why theirs is less expensive than the other WM in the area but everyone knows if they shop for quilt fabric where to look. JoAnns for me is 60 miles and the local Hancocks is exorbitant. Using a 40% off coupon is still too much for what they carry. Ann in TN

walmarts use to carry alot of great fab, then got rid of all of it. All the woman I know protested. We told them it would hurt there bottom line. But they wouldnt listen. Now I guess it did because they are in the process of bringing it back to there stores. I use to shop at walmarts because I could kill two birds with one stone. Shop for my home needs grocery and the hit the fabrics as a bonus.

You can enter the word "sewing" or "fabric" in the Search area of your local Craigslist page and get quite a few hits. "Fabric" is a more common term and you end up with a lot of irrelevant hits, but those can be easily weeded out.

Walmart has some really good prices on their fabrics. Watch for sales on-line sometimes you can get a yard for 3 or 4 dollars. Go to fabrics.com. if you get coupons from JoAnns you can get 40% off one item alot of times. But Walmart has some good prices. Search the web, go to garage sale and maybe some thrift shops. Hi Crystal, I use Whittlesfabrics.com, Thousandsofbolts.com, and Quiltfabriccloseout.com. on the internet. They carry quilt shop quality yardage averaging about $4.50 to $5.50/yard. I have ordered from all three of these companies and have been very satisfied with the fabrics and the service.
