NEW SWAP! Disappearing Four Patch quilt blocks!
#81
Oh, I tried a test block today. Yes, surely, you have to sew a scant 1/4" seam to achieve the 8 1/2" raw edge to raw edge block! If you girls decided to cut your 4 beginning squares of fabric a bit larger so as to be able to trim your block to the 8/ 1/2" -- just a tip about that: remember to put your center seam on the 4 1/4" line both side to side and top to bottom before you cut the outer edges! A full 8 1/2" block is great, but, if you happen to square up with two sides of your block on lines on your mat and then cut only the other 2 sides, it means that the center seam is bound to be in the wrong place...

I spent a couple of hours this afternoon sliceing and diceing and sewing my samples. I did find out something that may or not help out. In order to finish your block to the full 8 1/2" size, you really have to sew your seams with a "scant" quarter inch. Rather then fight that seam, I cut my squares 5 1/8th " and still sewed a scant 1/4th". I had to square it and had to cut off just a bit but it is now 8 1/2" square. Now I have to work on getting those tiny seams in the middle to behave.
I am getting really excited about this swap. So...what is the theme for the Dec. swap?

Well, regarding the final size of the block, I am using 5" charms and my 1/4" foot so I get a straight even seam. I already had all my 4Ps sewn before the size problem was mentioned, and I don't have fabric to start over. I sure hope mine come out the right size.

Thought y'all might get a laugh at seeing some real feedsack fabrics. These are of the quilt I mentioned earlier and I'm guessing these are the fabrics none of us would have in a dress or shirt. LOL

Have to say I'm glad the 30's has changed just a little. But if that's all you had...you would have used it I'm sure. Have to confess, I started on next month's today until the other fabric comes. This is the 1st time I have ever made this block. I didn't have any problems with the size but they sure take longer to make than what I thought!!

Missouri Quilts latest magazine has this pattern on it's front page, and there is a tutorial on their website as well.

Wildyard - I'm sure you'll be fine. I think even with a 1/4" foot you can still make it a scant 1/4" seam.
Any problems, let me know.
