Just got a cute little Singer Spartan. Anybody know anything about these machines? Says made in Great Britain and this is the only info I could find: Simanco, Cat RF J9-8

Would appreciate any help.

They are basically an economy version of a Singer 99 or 99K and are a 3/4 size machine. Same basic machine but they were generally sold without a carrying case or light. If you go to Singerco.com you should be able to find a manual for a Singer 99 that will work for your machine. They use standard 15x1 sewing machine needles and class 66 bobbins.
It should be a good little machine for you.

Is it a black machine? If so, then it is the one that Rodney detailed.

There is also a green Singer Spartan that is similar to a Singer 327K, and they are made in Great Britain.

My daughters favorite machine is her Spartan. The two of us found it at the Goodwill for $20 and she wouldn't part with it for anything. We are sewingmachineaholics and have several sewing machines in our family. We have two Spartans now. Mom has the second one which was put back in service by my brother. He also build a beautiful wooden base for it to sit in before he surprised Mom with it. I hope you will love your Spartan as we do ours. (We share machines as we sew at eachothers homes.)

I refurbished a Spartan using the Singer 99 &99K manual that Joe mentioned. Another manual that was quite helpful was How To Refurbish Sewing Machines downloaded from Tools For Self Reliance at www.tfsr.org.

Those little Spartans are almost as great as the FWs, only heavy....the ones I have didn't need any cleaning up at all. It seemed like they weren't all that heavily used--maybe a dealer sold out or something like that. I have 3 or 4, if I remember correctly, and have given one to a grandson to make himself a quilt top, and when he gets it pieced, I am going to teach him to use my Gammill--seems like it likes men better than women--my son has quilted most of my quilts on it, but he has moved off, made a better deal at the lake managing a marina.....

I love my spartins I have 3. I replaced a spoked wheel and converted one into a hand crank. Talk about portable! Love the round bobbin and the reverse
