Default Baby Quilt Size

I looked online to find a typical baby quilt size. One website suggested 34 inches x 52 inches.

I've started making it, but 34 inches now seems too narrow to use with 52 inches. I can adjust the pattern to make it wider than 34 inches... but how much wider?

What size baby quilts do you usually make?

Baby quilts come in all sizes. Some are simply 36" X 42" ( a yard of fabric) sometimes they are 30" or so square, some are crib sized, you can make it any size that you like. I think crib sized batting is 45" X 60" -- which would work for a quilt 40" X 55" or smaller. Depends on the use, ( wrap the new born? Use on the floor? Crib sized? New baby gift/ keepsake? One to last be used for a couple years? You will need to decide a few things, then make it the size you want it to be-- there is no ( a baby quilt is--- this size)

None of those things matter... It can be for any baby use. What size quilts have you made in the past?

Quilt sizes are not defined to one specific size because the size of a block can vary. I usually make baby quilts around 36" square or 36"x42". I guess now a days, you don't put anything in the crib with a baby.

Mine are mostly 40 - 42"wide, so I don't have to seam the backing. They go anywhere from 36" to 48" long.

Mine vary widely. I've done 36 x 44", 42 x 55", 38 x 52", and the one I'm starting in January is 40 x 54".

I would probably add at least 2-4" to the sides in order to get it the right proportion, but that's just me. You definitely could keep it as is. Even at 34"W it will still be wider and longer than the baby.

This is very helpful ladies... Thanks for your input.

I'm either going to make it two inches wider or redesign it and make it shorter... maybe both. 34 x 52 just didn't look right.

As we all know babies grow so fast and by the time they receive the quilt, they have only a short time to use it so I make my baby quilts at least 50 x 60 or larger. This way they might be able to use it for a couple of years or even go onto their toddler bed. Most of my quilts seem to become 60 x 70 by the time I add a border or two though.

Seems like most of mine work out around 36-40" wide and 44-48" long. Usually depends upon the block size.

The only baby quilts I've made have been 45" X 60", but that is crib size. So, if you don't want to make it crib size, you're pretty much free to make it any size you choose. I've seen crib size quilts used as play pen padding??? Your Choice!
