Default Size to cut jeans for rag quilt

Well, I am ready to cut up my Dad's jeans. He passed away a long time ago and I have been saving them forever. I was never able bring myself to cut them up but I think I am ready now. What size do you commonly cut the squares from jeans. I think this quilt will be something that I want to lay on my couch or bottom of my bed. I have some flannel I have gathered at garage sales and don't know if I even need a batting in between?? Thanking anyone in advance for information and measurements.

I like Jean rag quilts, not so much bulk in the seams. I didn't put anything on the back. It was heavy enough. I made it with 8.5" blocks. I saw one made with 6.5" blocks and bandanas. They had sewn the bandana fabric to the jeans fabric with a big X through the middle. No batting. Then they alternated which fabric was up. It was also a rag quilt. I think flannel would look nice also. Just be sure to prewash the flannel because it will shrink. Keep us posted on what you decide. What a nice way to get a hug from your dad anytime you need one.

I cut mine at 5 inches, chamois flannel on top, and 1/2 inch seams. I sewed an X to hold the layers together.

I think one can cut them at whatever size one pleases.

I think there is a die available for one of die cutters.

i cut the size i could get the most. meaning the legs give me five or maybe eight and that would work elsewhere. Have fun!

I like the denim quikts cut from squares and then sewn Catherdral Window style. You can do the squares any size you can get from the jeans. When I cut up jeans, I don't open up the seams but cut beside them.

is 1/2" seam what is needed for jeans? I am thinking of starting a jean quilt - but not a rag quilt. Just plain blocks - and I was wondering what seam allowance

is 1/2" for the ragging? do you think 1/4" would work for normal blocks from blue jeans?

back to your question... I would think that you can cut the blocks any size whatever will get you the most use from the jeans

I cut mine 7" and then used 1/2" seams.

5" blocks, 1/2 inch seams, nothing but the denim. I have 2 of these now.

I use 6 1/2 inch circles - get about 18 per pair of jeans. Takes 196 circles to make one quilt. One the circles are sewn together a piece of batting is placed in the center and covered with a piece of fabric. The "petals" are stitched down and your quilt is completed. (about 20 hours after starting). I'm working on #10 now. They will be Christmas gifts.
