okay - - so, you purchased about 2 and 1/3 yard of fabric for 5.18 - - still not a bad deal ...
most jelly roll pieces are cut the width of the fabric, so they are 2.5" wide x 40 -42 inches long.
So fun to see how/what you do. <wave>

Jelly Roll strips are 2 1/2 inches wide, cut width of fabric. I've done this method using scraps I cut up, all different lengths. You just have to measure each scrap as you go so that they add up to 1600 inches. It turns out awesome! I call it my "walk down memory lane" quilt because I see all the different fabrics I've used in the last few years. Super fun!!!

I have been thinking about how color placement might dictate how scrappy the quilt might turn out.
What do you suppose my quilt would have looked like had I taken all the color families and kept them together in the first operation of sewing strips together, end to end?
I have all of the Nicki and Pam Lintott Jelly Roll books and one of the things I noticed what they separate the jelly rolls into either color families or lights and darks before cutting.
What would my quilt look like if I took a jelly roll and starting with the darkest or lightest and then moving up the color wheel, so to speak, so that all the darks are on one end and the lights on the other?

one tip: I probably would have had a straighter edge on one side of my quilt if I had gone ahead and stitched the length clear to the end, and then used a ruler and rotary cutter to cut the steps in half at that time. As it is, one of my edges is relatively straight, while the other side has a definite bow in it.

And, while I was thinking about squaring up that bowed edge, I realized ... if I took and stitched the whole thing into a tube, I could then cut varying widths and maybe have an attractive bargello of sorts. Keeping in mind that each cut will lessen the width by half an inch, it might just be "cutting off my nose to spite my face" ... however, it would definitely look more scrappy.

Anyway, with this jelly roll, I sewed all the strips together in color families. I thought a picture of the roll, the unrolling (isn't that always fun?), the way the colors will be fed into the machine for the first long strip, and then the final project.
And! Since I had one more jelly roll in that container, I took a picture of the next roll that I will be working with - - tonight! <wave>

I was at my favorite quilt shop this morning for a free class, and looked at the jelly rolls. I'm going to take my daughter back so she can pick one out, as it will be for her room. I can't WAIT!!! Yours looks fabulous!

There is way too much light for my tastes, but for practice purposes, it is a pretty good indicator of what to look for for color ways.
I might suggest, for those of you who want a scrappier Super Fast, stitch the seams open because if the pieces are cut in half or whatever, you most assuredly will end up with seams coming together at an inopportune time.
I am sure there is a formula of some kind that can help us utilize the pattern to its best ability, but I haven't settled on it yet <wave>

Thank you. The floral one (the second one I made had I don't know, maybe five color families with a variety of textures and print sized), but there were no duplicate of any of the strips.
The first one was smaller because of the 33 strips, and there were three each of eleven fabrics, and I am thinking I ought to try to duplicate that sample with a different way of feeding the strips in.
This last one is too light ... 23 blue and red family and 17 strips of extremely light, more white than most families could tolerate, I am thinking ...
a tip might be - - they won't let you open the fabric up in the store, of course, but look for one that seems to have equal parts of light and dark. In the floral one, there were only about three strips of red ... I could have gone with more <g>
And, I am not sure if it would have made a difference, but there are two ways to stitch the folded parts ... either right hand side (which is what I have done through all three samples)
or, flip everything over and stitch down the other side ... at the time, I couldn't see that it would make a difference, but maybe .... I think I will try the flipping it from one side to the other, every other time of stitching on the next one I make, JUST to see what will happen <g>
oh, well ... two quilt tops today ... I think I have done all right <wave>

Wow!!!! you are officially obsessed with the SuperFast JR concept!!! (That's a GOOD thing!) It just goes to show you how fun this whole process is. I'm sure both of the last ones you made will look even better when you get the borders on, (something else to play with) and the quilting finished. I'm always amazed at how a "nice" top turns into a "great" top when it's been quilted.
Anyway....glad you are having a good time exploring all the possiblities!

LOL ... I just got done reading all of the Bargello thread by danmar ... I am thinking on that last one - - maybe I will cut it up, turn the strips one way or another, perhaps add something here and there and change the look totally ... but, so far is it just "I am thinking ..." at this point, I cannot be convicted of ANYTHING!
