Thanks Champanier. That rules out the 1950s machines from Karlsruhe. I believe that they all started with PA, PB, or PC.

As far as I can tell, it just depends on which bobbin case the factory put on them. The ones with the open case seem to take the common 15x1 needles, while the closed cases seem to take only the 206x13. I’d say to go with what case it has on it, and then carefully test without power.

I should have been more clear. What I meant to ask is whether the earlier 206 takes the 206x13 only, i.e. is it plagued with the same design of the 1950s 206 (and 306, 319, 320) machines.

Okay, I was easy to convince. Just called and bought it for $30. It's just down the road, unlike most of my sewing machines that require long road trips.

The owner said his mother brought it over from Germany with her in 1939, from either Berlin or Braunschweig. She put it away and they just discovered it again when she was moving.

I'm sure I'll be looking for help. I know the tension is put together all callywampus and I don't know what some of the other controls are for.

Thank you!

A couple of goodies came with it - Singer oil can and manual for a completely different machine - a Modern. Plus another shot of the underside.

Sounds like the seller's mother is still living. I would ask him if it is possible to sit down with her and go over the machine.

Although the machine is local, the seller is not, unfortunately. That would be a great idea.

Ohhhhhhh, I am just having a fit here with your good luck in finding a machine of this caliber for $30. Lucky you. I would have bought it for $50. And would have the DH getting it up and running in our "finally cold" weather here in Tennessee. It is snowing here, and we are snugged in, me at the computer and him at his cross word puzzle.

You got a great deal at $30! I would have been happy to pay the $50 if I had the money available.
