I have succumbed to the charms
of the Featherweight! I know I paid too much, but I don't see them around here and just wanted one. Her name is Audrey, after my mother who first tried to teach me to sew. I am not mechanically inclined, so I had her checked out by someone who comes into my Bernina dealer to service other brands of machines. He said she was in good shape and is a good investment, whatever that means. Audrey was born in 1938 and came with a few attachments. I bought it on eBay, and the seller didn't know much about packing sewing machines. She arrived with a gouge on the flip up extension, which disappointed me. After I showed the seller what had happened, he refunded my shipping cost. Otherwise, she is adorable. I'm ashamed to say I have not tried to sew with her yet. I'm a little intimidated. But I do like looking at her!

What Steve said.
audsgirl,
The FeatherWeights are very simple little critters. Straight forward, user simple and intuitive. Remember the people back then were usually very intelligent, but not overly technical.
Do you have an owners manual. If not get one, or download a free .pdf from Singer. The only ticklish part that I usually read about is the FWs thread different and the needle goes in backwards from most others.
Once you get past the intimidation and get to sewing on it you'll love it.

I love mine, they are great lil machines. Just get to sewing on her you'll never turn back.
There are several sites that deal with FW's as in parts and feet and manuals. She's a beauty for sure.
I have several, I have my birthday year one and also bought one for my cuz we where born the same year.
She said it wouldn't sew right for her. It sewed fine when I gave it to her, then I brought it home again and it still sews fine. She just likes newer machines so now I have 2 1955's and several others.
