Delilah, I believe the JA5 is a Brother machine. I recently saw a 3000 at a thrift store I frequent and am pretty sure it had the cams. The last time I was there he still had it. I don't think it had a manual. The thrift store is in the process of moving and is supposed to open August 1st. I will try to make it there Saturday and see if I can get a picture of the cams. I'm pretty sure there was no indication of which machine the cams went to until I saw the machine.

Nope, Brother didn't badge machines for Penneys. The Wards/Penny's Yahoo group can tell you who made this machine.

Okay, I was just told that Sanshin built this machine. I was also told that most Sanshin multi stitch machines had built in cam stacks, not very many took external cams. Ebay is probably your best bet, but still a crap shoot. Without seeing a pic of a machine with its' cams so you know what to look for, about all you can do is keep buying different ones until you get the right ones. Do a google image search for JC Penney sewing machine and look for pics that show the cams with the machines. Should give you an idea what to look for.

If you do get the right cams for your machine please post them and the machine in "The Cam Thread". It's a thread I started to try to build a database for cams and machines. It hasn't gotten very far yet.

Thank you Cari for checking into the company that made Penney's machines. I find it interesting that there is so much info about companies that made machines which were badged by Wards & Sears but not Penney's. I was going by a machine I have that has JA 5 & JC 16 on it but also has "B.I.C." cast into the base. (Side note - why both?? and what is difference between JA & JC designations). I can't imagine a reason why it would have B.I.C. cast in base and a different company's JA number[ATTACH=CONFIG]526498[/ATTACH][ATTACH=CONFIG]526499[/ATTACH]

I got some black cams off ebay...didn't fit.......anybody wants them let me know, don't know what machine they go with, for sure won't work with mine. ...will post cams if ever I find right ones....but if anyone want the black ones ...you can have they.

All it takes is someone to do the research. I don't know how far back Penneys badged machines with their name. The guy who runs the Yahoo group probably knows. What machine did you show the bottom of? No one knows exactly what the JA/JC #s mean. Some sort of manufacturing codes, but there just isn't any way to search for Japanese records, if there even are any. The database on the VintageJapanese Yahoo group is full of errors. There is a better one on another group but I can't remember which one. I also believe that there was some crossover or connections between some of the Japanese manufacturers at least up into the mid to late 1950s, as I've noticed many times identical parts on machines of different makers. I have Morse and Brother clone machines that are twins. 90% of the time I can spot a Brother machine just from a pic as they are my thing.

I was able to get some pix of the cam set for the Penncrest 3000. the individual pix didn't turn out so well. It appears that there are 24 plus one in machine. The cams come in a black bottom box with an off white top. There are two layers of 12 each. The cams are about 1 1/2" - 1 3/4" in diameter, 3/4" tall, center hole 1/2" and have two small holes on either side to set. I can't find the hot link to add images so hope "attachments" show up. I hope these help. I do have a few other pix if needed. The 11 cam is the one that I took out to show the side view.

The box itself is about 5"x7"
