eBay -and expect to pay $50- $80 for it. And you do have to make sure to get one for that series of machines, as some lower end models take a similar pedal, but you do need the correct one for it to work well.
I have two 990's, but only one pedal. Machines without pedals are easy to find - so that puts the pedals in demand. I've had mine for 35 years with no problems. I do not think they go bad, they just get separated from the machine during estate sales. My MIL made sure to grab her Mom's Elna- but she did not make sure to grab anything but the machine All the plugs/accessories were in separate case, and who knows where that ended up.

I have a 6000 series Viking from 1976 with a pedal issue. The challenge is that the power cord and the cord to the pedal are one and the same at the junction of the machine. The machine is otherwise in excellent shape but the pedal overheats. So far I have not been able to find a replacement. It would be so nice if things were not so model specific.

I know with the 9XX series (early 80's) the pedal has some electronics in it that the machine uses (like the needle up and down). However with the 6000 series, I don't recall anything like that (have a 6570).
I'd suggest getting a replacement electronic pedal and putting it on the end of the cord and try it. We did that with a Bernina 830 Record and it worked fine.
