The machine I worked with today was a vacuum cleaner, trying to get the house cleaned up for Thanksgiving guests! Yesterday I worked on a Montgomery Ward Signature Dressmaker UHT J252B. It's cleaning up well enough although when I reassembled the hook area I can hear something rubbing. I've taken it apart and reassembled over and over and had no luck figuring it out. I oiled everything too just to see if that was the problem. I'll have to spend some time on it Friday.

It has an engraved needle picture on it and says to use a 1 17/32 length needle. Does anyone know what type that would be?

I pulled out a 301 to check over since it has been sitting a while and I know I worked on that machine - I really know it.... BUT it was 'frozen' so I started looking. The cord was wrapped around the needle bar. Pulled it off. Then it was still 'frozen' so I turned it some more - got worse??? So I looked and there was thread wrapped around the bobbin area. Now that one 'un-froze' pretty quick. LOL

Well, you might not have helped that particular "fix it" technique disappear with your recent ads...

I'm sure there are good T&S machines. I have a mental block against them because the one I got or my 10th birthday wasn't the bicycle I'd asked for and I wasn't allowed to take lessons, so all of my learning was by trial and error. I learned to duck flying needle shrapnel, knit sweaters for my bobbins and otherwise ruin projects. 24 years later, we attended couples counseling (sewing lessons) where I learned that I was the problem in the relationship and I learned to make that machine work for me but the relationship was already so damaged that we divorced soon afterward and I can't date another T&S to this day.

I'm working on a stupid Singer 301. I got the darn thing all cleaned out inside - and believe me that one was a mess. I haven't done the tension yet - I'm sure it will need some work everything else did... Then I was going to test sew - some times I do that after I get some of it cleaned some times I do it sooner. Well the pressure foot was crooked - got it fixed. Then the needle bar is crooked. So I thought I'd tweak it a bit. Well the screw slot is all torn up. I took a pic and I even circled it!!! You all are an influence on me. Does anybody know how to get that screw out?

Yay!! Miriam's a circling machine!

Dremel to cut the slot deeper? You'd have to be incredibly steady for that though. I wonder if the elastic in the slot might help here? I'd also look for a new screw once you do get this one out. Hopefully they didn't crank it in so far that the needlebar also has marks.

I'd try a rubberband in the slot and then the screwdriver. If that doesn't work is there enough to grab with a pliers? Wrap with a rubberband first and then use pliers. *Then find a replacement screw.

I gave it all I had with the rubber band and put a hole clean through the rubberband - the screw didn't budge but I think more if it is crumbling off........... DH says his easy out is too big for that screw. Hardware store is closed........... I think I may have a donor screw but I'm not for sure.
