Default My Mother's FW--Now Mine!

My mother has moved into a retirement community and has had to downsize, so she gave me her FW. I have the original Bill of Sale that goes with it. It's dated 8/23/47 and was one of the first ones produced after WWII ended. She had to be on a waiting list to get it. She made dresses for me and herself, and I learned to sew on it. There are many memories that go with this machine. The gold decals are worn nearly off, but I'll never refurbish this machine since it was my mother's hands that wore them off! I have had it serviced, and it is in good running shape, but I have one question. What kind of needles does she prefer or require? All I have are Schmetz, Organ and Klasse. Can I use any of these, or do I have to get Singer needles? TIA for the answer.

As long as they are 15x1 you can use all those brands. Schmetz and Organ are excellent brands. Singer has been hit or miss.

Thanks, Joe! (But I don't know what 15x1 means) Where can I find this info? Connie

Just wanted to say I enjoyed the story of the featherweight. Mine is from some unknown home, but it is a little worn and I think it is part of the character. I wish we could get our vintage machines to tell their stories. Would be pretty interesting I'm sure. Especially when they say "and they left me in a closet for a long long time".

How wonderful that you have a family featherweight...I too have no idea where my little machine came from but even with her worn decals she will be treasured by you and one day maybe a child or grandchild

conniemaried,

15x1 is the needle system. It's usually found on all the packages. JoAnns and other places carry them by the rack full.
So does Sew-Classic and many many other on line stores.

I am so happy for you that you got your mother's machine. It is the most precious when it was owned by a loved one.
