the book that came with it says 500, i tried to look it up, it was made in 1961. when i looked on the web it said never sew with out the o cam.

I have been searching to find out where you found info that said not to sew without a 0 cam. http://blog.sew-classic.com/2008/10/...ne-review.aspx I checked out Jenny's info on the Slant-O-Matics and she did not mention it there. I suppose you could email and ask her and she would for sure know. I've never seen a Singer 500 or a 401 with a 0 cam. Only the 403 and the 503 came with the 0 cam or needed the 0 cam. Mechanically, I don't see how it would matter.
