but new to the game, did Brother buy clones and then rebadge them for others (it says Brother on the base)
or is this not a 15?

Trip to Miriam and Phil's place
 

Hi all, just returned from Miriam and Phil's we spent three days with them and had the most wonderful time. I spent an entire day with Miriam and rewired about three or four motors(potted and standard). I think we got seven or eight machines running. In return we hit all the antique and thrift stores in Indy. Shopping with Miriam is a ruthless ordeal she is a shopper!!!!. I found a pink machine that is in demand and she pushed me aside and bought it out from under me and then had the gall to have me carry it until she paid for it. What a lady. But I got even at the last shop I found a MOP Singer 12 in a folding cabinet(like a puzzle box) and loaded in her car along side the the little pink thing. We had a great time hitting almost all the shops in Indy. Pat and I are looking forward to Miriam and Phil to visit us so we can do the same here. Well if they don't come in Jan we will plan another trip to Indy. She may get tired of us. That is okay I will rewire more machines for her.:D

(I found it... he pushed ME out of the way... but he did VOLUNTEER to haul it to the front for me. Thank you Glenn. That picture does not do the Singer 12 justice. It is very nice. And the cabinet is such a disappointment to Glenn - it doesn't need work.)

Miriam you are such a hoot. Yes she really found it and you all know I was not about to buy a pink machine with a motor on it:D If any one is familiar with the 12 mine does not seem to have a clutch release on the wheel and all the manuals I have found are later ones with the release. Maybe I don't know how to work it. This one seems to be a very early one.. I just love the way the coffin unfolds to make the bed of the cabinet for a nice sewing surface. Yes the cabinet needs no work and the machine needs cleaning. But I did snag the two spools from Miriam and the cabinet needs a little work so all is not lost. I also found a Jones CS HC very cheap in Indy. Yes I was like a kid in a candy store at Miriam's shop oh it was so much fun. I also brought back a New Home treadle dated around 1880 or so. When I get organized from the trip will post pics of the machines. Miriam and Phil are the best.

Glenn showed me how to rewire some machines - we spent all day Monday - we were ready to drop. Then we went over to Yummy's and got gyros for supper. I think we meant to go to Harold's Steer Inn but Harold's was closed. Whew - I hope I can remember what I am doing when I get back to the shop. My shoulder has been killing me so I've spent all my free time at the chiropractor... I still have to put the gray motor on the pink and gray machine and then test that machine.

Sunday, Glenn was like a kid in a candy store - he kept running around looking... Some of the machines aren't so much to look at though. Then he about fell over when he saw how many cabinets I had. Then he figured out there were more in the other room. Glenn, we should have looked in some of those cabinets - I don't even know what is in them any more. Anyway we spent most of the afternoon just looking at the shop... never did see everything though.

That Singer 12 is not really very ornate with the gold painting - it must have belonged to someone rich who used it for display. It is very neat - it makes a box or folds down to make the top of the table. It is in real nice shape. Pat found it and dragged Glenn and I to look at it. (We were kicking and screaming & dragging all the way... ) That Singer 12 even still has the belt guard. You can't really see the mother of pearl inlays all that well in the picture. Believe me it is one nice machine. Oh and I though Glenn was going to loose it at the antique store when I lent him my handy dandy screwdriver that I haul - it fits hinge pin screws real nice. You wouldn't believe the stuff we hauled in my Honda Fit. Whew, I thought we were going to have to tie Glenn on the roof or the hood or somewhere sort of like a dead deer just to get it all home.

I found quite a few machines while we were out junking around but I just am out of space well, except for pink... LOL

I'm a total newbie at vintage machines......help!!

I just acquired a Singer 301a......I'm *IN LOVE*!! She was very neglected/dirty but her stitches were amazing!! I have done lots of surfing/research and I guess my old brain is just not wanting to cooperate with me!! Can someone please tell me what is the best cleaner/solvent to use on gummed up grease on the gears and other metal parts? Can I use Tri-flow for the sewing machine oil.....I know I need to use the Singer Motor Lubricant for the motor but just wondering about the oil?? Also, at the top there are 3 oil holes that have wicks in them....is that common?? Haven't seen anything like that in my research.....just wondering if it might be gummed up oil! :eek:

Yes, there are wicks. You can use Triflow oil on the machine, it's great. Follow your manual's directions for oiling locations. But use regular sewing machine oil on the wicks. And don't use Triflow on the motor if it has grease ports. And use grease on the gears only. I use Triflow grease, but you can use Singer grease if you have that. I typically just try to remove as much dried grease as possible by hand and then the Triflow grease pretty much eats away the junky, dried grease so it comes off really easy.

Miriam is not kidding I thought I was going to have to ride on the top of the car,but it all fit even me.:D
