I have a bid on one - I'm pretty sure there are things broken on it. The Cinderella works like that underneath, too.

Uh oh, maybe I better cancel that 285
The Singer model 285 was a development of the 185 model which it replaced. The 185 had in turn a few years earlier been a cosmetically re-packaged version of the long serving model 99K, re-using many of the same parts as the 99. Although the 285K looks almost identical to the 185K it had a competely new oscillating rack and pinion drive arrangement to the lower hook mechanism under the bed. Unfortunately this 'improvement' was not well received, as it tended to make the 285 machines both noiser and subject to vibration. At least I'm not paying 75 to over 100 dollars plus shipping. I will give the little bugger a go for 25.00 :) |

Got a quick question on a fiddle base treadle. I have never seen one in person but found one on Kijiji and was wondering if you can dismantle them? For instance, can you sewing machine off the base? I tried to look for hinges but it is hard to see in the pictures. Also if need be, can I take the irons off the table?
Here is a picture Thanks for any advice. Jackie |

Fizeos, I saw your Pfaff treadle machine in our Photo shop. We are not suppose to chat in the photo shop, cause it will end up like this board - hundreds of pages long!
Anyway, the Pfaff head is in really bad shape - lots and lots of rust, peeling/chipped paint. The machine is not worth much at all except to someone who appreciates the old girls. The irons could be re-done with a new table top if you are handy that way. The machine will never look good the way it is all chipped/peeling but it would be a candidate for a re-paint if you wanted to go to the trouble. It would look good on a shelf too just the way it is, but as far as what you could get for it - where I live you'd be lucky to give it away. Sorry, but the prices you see on Craigslist, etc., are really not indicative of what the machines are really selling for - they are mostly wishful thinking on the part of the sellers! Sorry, I don't mean to sound mean, I'd get that machine just cause it is a Pfaff, but unfortunately, there are not a lot of people who really appreciate the really neglected/abused machines unless they get them for practically nothing or the machine is really rare!
