Default Singer Fashionmate 237

So today i spied a Singer Fashionmate 237 in a local pawn shop. They're asking $65 for it. I looked underneath and took the top off its all metal except for four parts, the top cover, the side cover, the bobbin ring thingy that holds the hook and casing in, and a little plastic thingy on the stitch length adjusting lever. That looks to just be decorative.

It is also missing the bobbin casing. The motor sounds like its get up and go got up and went. The needle does go up and down freely when i turn it by hand. I also noticed it had a .7 amp motor which is smaller than my Kenmores 1.0. Oh and the lamp does turn on!

So, should i pull the trigger? It is slightly out of my price range lol which is basically between free and $35. Haha

Don't know much about this model so I did a search for reviews of this machine. I'm including the links for you to decide if it's worth the price.

You have your price range which isn't unreasonable. I wouldn't pay that, unless I'd fallen for it. A 201 or a 401 would definitely be worth it, or if it comes with a cabinet. I say save your money and look for a 201 or 401.

Mike

Too much money. Unless you can convince them of the missing part and get a discount of at least half I'd walk. I know a bobbin case for the machine is 5.00 or less, but that is not the point. 237's are nice but they are not rare or worth 65.00.

A working 237 is a decent machine - I bought five of them - but they are what I consider 'the economy line' - although relatively problem free.

I think $65 is too much it it isn't 'ready to sew'

Can a spool pin be replaced on a 237? I have one but the pin snapped at the base of the machine and it's plastic so just wondering. I have it jury rigged right now to work.

Yes. I bought some replacement pins through e-bay. Those pins really are rinky-dink on an otherwise respectable machine.

Thanks, good to know. Did want to use the machine with a good pin. Just playing with the machine it seemed like a good one. Was the old pin hard to get out?

Hi again! I went back today and talked her down to a more reasonable price. Turns out it was there so long she couldn't remember what she paid for it and it wasn't in their computer system. So i am now the proud owner of a Singer Fashionmate 237, i got it for the low low price of $20. It's my second Singer, my first one was the Singer Graduate.
