Unknown Singer treadle
Hi
My hubby found this machine buried in a junk shop today. As he walked by he saw the pedal and thought he would would clear it off. After clearing it off he saw it was a small Singer in a small cabinet. He could not find any numbers on it so I could not look it up. The machine is in surprisingly good shape and the decals seem to be good also, however it is very, very dirty. The top is missing, the belt is missing and the cabinet is a little rough but solid. The vendor wants a 100 dollars for it but I feel that is too much. I would like to know what model this is and if the top is available. Hubby tried on line but could not find a top however he doesn't know all the little secret places they may be hiding. Also would like to know if 100 dollars is a fair price. Thanks in advance for any info you can provide

That is a singer model 12.
if it is the original irons then it is most likely pre-1885 (when the cross support on the treadle irons was changed)
There should be numbers stamped into the plate on the bed on the right side where the stitch length regulator is.
There are two numbers. the larger one is the dating number. if you get it, I will look it up for you.
NOTE: It looks like this one MAY have MOP (Mother of Pearl) in the bed. the design on the top looks like the ones used with MOP
$100 is a good price for a Model 12 in the original cabinet. Coffin/Bonnet lids are not too hard to find. If it is a MOP machine then $300-$500 would be closer to a fair price
The black wheel indicates that it may have been made for the overseas market. (Chromed item were subject to a "luxury" tax and so by painting them instead they were cheaper to import.

i am assuming it's a singer sewing machine model 12. the only thing i can tell you is, that is a nice machine. but to me $100 might be a little too high. there is one on CL awhile back in my area that he was selling for $150 but it's clean, and in working condition with all parts intact. the price will depend on you. there might not be a right answer if it's high or not. try to haggle and maybe you can get it for half the price. and for $50, i will jump on it.
