For those that try to upload photos on this forums system here's some tips.

A: Reduce the size of the pic to 640x480. Much easier to download and much easier to look at. When they come up they fill the screen but you don't have to use the scroll bar and scroll back and forth and up and down to see the monster pic.

B: Do them one at a time.

C: Forget it and use an off site photo storage site such as Photobucket. { http://photobucket.com/ }
I have hundreds of pictures stored there and can access them at a moments notice. All I do is put the url link for the pic in my text and it opens as a picture on this and 9,000,000,000 other forums.
And, they are my photos and if I want to delete them from this forum which won't let me do so after 20 minutes all I have to do is go to Photobucket and delete that pic.

D: Getting a Photobucket account is easy, fairly quick and best of all, free. You can do albums, slide shows, and there is a photo processing feature in there too. Although I've never used it because I always reduce the size of my pics to 640x480 or 800x600 before downloading them to Photobucket. Much faster uploading to PB that way, and again it's much easier for those who read the forums to see the pics.

About using the tubing instead of leather for the treadle belts. I haven't tried the tubing, but even the leather will stretch and have to be adjusted at least once after you start using your treadles. The one thing I learned after using several treadles all the time, is to not tighten the belt too much! Also, make sure there is no sewing machine oil in the treadle grove. I wipe the grove out after I oil the machines just to make sure there is no oil residue in that grove.

On a happy note, I bought a Viking 6010 yesterday. This is my first Swedish machine so I am excited about it! It was running when the lady last plugged it in, but it is frozen now! I will see if I can get it running. Supposedly, this machine is from the late 60's so it will be fun. I usually don't work on machines that new - except FW's of course!

I may need help when I get the time to dig into this machine. I hope I can get it to run!

Joe, I agree that everyone needs to re-size their photos before loading here! But, I just have a folder labeled sewing machine photos, quilt photos, etc., on my hard drive. It is really easy to just go to that folder when I want to upload a photo to this site. I have never had a problem, and I don't have Photo Bucket either. I also agree with Joe to load only one photo at a time here. I always have problems when I try to load more!

Laura, when you get the message 'text is too short" or whatever it actually says - I don't remember what the exact message is - it usually means you are in the middle of the text you are doing a 'reply' to. I have had that happen too. When you get that message just scroll down and you will see that you are probably trying to insert your message in the middle somewhere of the 'quote' you are replying to. If you just delete your text, go to the very end of the quoted text, post your reply after the quoted text, you won't see that message come up.

My memory for names is terrible. Always has been so it's not an old phart issue. Anyway one of the gals here recomended the aquarium tubing some time back so on a trip to Wal-Mart several months ago we got a package.

Here is what I found works the best ... so far:

Wrap the tubing around the pullys, through the guides and around the hand wheel as if it were installed, then gently pull on it to remove the kinks and bends of being in the package. Once that's done, put the end against the tube and cut it there. Do not stretch it more than to take the kinks out. After you've cleared the extra out of the way, cut 1" off the piece your gonna use. Cut that little 1" piece lengthwise and roll it up tight. Stick the rolled up piece into one end of the tube, then with the tubing through all the places and guides, stick the other end of the rolled up piece in the other end of the tube. Wahlaaaa, you just made a belt.



As sensitive as leather belts are to oil, the tubing belts are worse. You've got to keep them free of machine and hand oils too.

Nancy, if I can help, let me know as I've rebuilt two Vikings. They're not easy machines to repair,so I hope you have a minor problem. Great machines and I think you'll like it!

Thanks for all of the suggestions on using tubing. I am using a staple from the old leather belt but I am going to try your technique Joe next time I shorten it. Oil in the groove might be an issue. I did clean it very well initially but perhaps oil has found its way in there again. I'll re-clean and keep trying - I may just end up ordering that leather one. Thanks again everyone.

On one of my machines, I have a rubber band in the spoke wheel groove to help prevent slipping. That may work too for you.

Your aquarium tubing belt gave me an idea. I'd been wondering what to do with the old tubing from my nebulizer. Since you explained how to join the ends, I'll try it on one of my treadles next time I get new tubing.

If it works, let me know. My mom was on a nebulizer for the last couple years before she passed and I remember that tubing well. I don't have any, but from what I remember it was fairly tough tubing.

We have a photo thread were we can post photos but not talk about them. Kind of awkward in my opinion to have to bounce back and forth between threads so I don't bother.

This thread is sort of a continual conversation and is confusing as heck most of the time. So I tend to check it first every time I come on QB.

The Vintage Machine section is where I spend most of my time cos I can make specific threads and keep tab on them.

I do know that when I post a thread that has a question I need answered or one like my box repair thead and it turns into a long and productive thread I bookmark it because once it drops off the front page I'll never find it again.

This is a very different forum format, but not unworkable.
