So how many of you have dared to sew with the glass pressure foot so far? I haven't gotten my #8 up and running just yet, still a project in the making (as many of the "projects" I have)! I only have the one glass insert for that one and I'm very afraid of breaking it. Also, have any of you ever tried to make or have someone make reproduction ones at all?

Fox, I'd love to see pics of your machine! Is it a W&W6?

I have used my 8 with the glass foot in place, but was VERY watchful and careful. I didn't do much, just some "test sewing" with it as I'm just too concerned over the fragility of the decals to do much else! I would advise, if you are going to use the machine with the glass foot in place that you go slow and steady, making sure that the needle isn't pulled so that it doesn't hit the glass.

I've never checked into having new glass inserts made. When I get to the point that I'm ready to make a quilt on the 8, I will use the steel straight stitch foot that I have for it. (Yes, I'm a big chicken!! )

Both Joe! I have never really seen any feedback about the glass feet, but considering that W&W made and sold them for many years, they must have been at least somewhat successful and sturdy. That would point to the "chicken" part of me... the idea that they most likely would be difficult at best to replace would be the cautious part!

I am thinking that the reason that the glass feet are so rare is that they did get broken, a lot. They may have been successful but Singer may have decided that it was not an improvement to continue with after purchasing Wheeler & Wilson for cost reasons.

At some point the sewing machine owner likely discovered that the machine would sew without the glass feet inserts. Likely the glass feet were more readily available a hundred years ago. Like Charlee, I am hesitant to sew on mine as I have only one of the glass feet.
